News From the Triangle Duo

SEASON’S GREETINGS from the Handler Studio – Winter 2010

We send warm wishes to our many friends across the  country! This past year has been wonderful for us, with many happy times and fun-filled events. We hope the New Year brings the same to you, with peace and happiness to all.

We’ve had the usual busy pace of shows in the triangle area and Open Studios here in Fearrington Village. Best of all, our new website was finally completed in 2010! To give you a sampling of the reactions, here are a few snippets from folks who have enjoyed the Open Studio gatherings here in the triangle; been to an exhibition or visited the new site and sent their reactions.   I call this our Kudos collection.

“What a fabulous new website!! This is a brilliant display and discussion  of Murry’s work. Superb in design, concept, and content!!” JB (a collector  in Ma.)

“Wow. This work is stunning.” GE (an Arts Consultant, on seeing Metalica)

“The ‘Human Condition’ hangs beautifully on a wall behind my bed in my bedroom. I love it. Petri J (a collector who purchased a large acrylic)

“Murry, I…wanted you to know I think the new installation in the lobby is one of the best public art displays in North Carolina. I am so impressed  at  how you keep pushing the edge of your art further with each new piece.” John  M (a fellow artist)

“We had such a great evening at your house. It was a very good way to see
the range of Murry’s work and we… like the new efforts…. We were struck by  the comments of the owners of Murry’s work…they just love the pieces they  own and are very proud to have them. It seems as if you make good friends
out of all your buyers.”
Joanne S (neighbor and friend)

“The best part of your party was Murry’s sharing the secrets of how his brain works and learning that even though he is not trying to be creative  his sub-conscious mind chugs right along and without getting instructions puts together beautiful and profound visual images. I felt grateful to have  been included in the evening…Charleen S (a first time visitor to the  studio)

“Murry’s gift to the hospital is but a small part of the gift he has given to all of us who have seen and appreciated his work; and, especially for people like me who are lucky to have one of his pieces on our walls.” Arlene C. (owner of a Handler)

The schedule for Holiday exhibitions was an ambitious one. Here is where Handler works were being seen:

  • Frank Gallery Chapel Hill, The Gift of Art is No Small Wonder’ through Jan. 9
  • Chatham Arts Gallery, Pittsboro, NC ‘Whimsical Gifts of Art That Challenge the Imagination’ Through Jan. 31
  • Green Hill Center for NC Arts, Greensboro NC, 30th Annual Winter Show Invitational for which the curator selected 3 figurative Handler drawings. The show is “a comprehensive survey of the finest arts and crafts being produced in the state.” Through Jan. 15 Siler City, NC 6th Annual Art for the Holiday Shopper.

Accolades from the media:

The Artist’s Magazine, Cincinnati selected the acrylic painting Shortcut Home as a finalist in the Landscape/Interior category of the magazine’s 27th Annual Art Competition. The credit was listed in the Dec. issue of the magazine.

The art critic for the Durham Herald Sun Newspaper had this to say:

“There is no question that the Durham Art Guild membership includes the best artists in the area. Among the painters…Eleanor Edwards-Smith…, Roberta Wallace… and Murry Handler’s strong black-and-white abstract with its slabs of tin foil. I have seen a number of Handler’s paintings and he is ready for a Guild solo show.” Blue Greenberg

The art pictured below is Metalica #13. It’s the last in a new series by Murry that features a multi-media technique. In addition to acrylic paint, the artist has interwoven sections of aluminum, creating layers of texture, smooth and crinkled, wavy and curvaceous. The sinuous shiny metal is difficult to work with and creates a challenge for the artist. The brilliant glow it adds to the paint pays off on this major triptych.  Size is 6′ x 9′.

We wish you a very Happy New Year and look forward to hearing from you in the months to come.
