Memories of Maine
Murry Handler was born in Bangor, Me. His memories of the magnificent Maine coast, with its huge slabs of rocks leading to the ocean, remain vivid. In this series he recreates the emotional impact of Maine’s scenic beauty on his childhood.
Among other profoundly important visual images that he retains from his youth are recollections of traveling the mighty Alagash River. One of the few rivers in the U.S. which flow north, the Alagash River journeys from Maine to Canada, with treacherous rapids, narrow passages and dense forest close to its banks.
The Alagash paintings depict this with forceful brushstrokes of black ink on archival bond paper. The remaining Maine series are acrylic on canvas unless otherwise noted.
